Brie and Pear Puff Pastry Tart

  • Author: Amelia
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Brie and Pear Puff Pastry Tart

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 wheel of brie cheese (about 68 ounces), thinly sliced
  • 12 ripe but firm pears, thinly sliced (Bosc or Anjou pears work well)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary leaves, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional, for added crunch)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

For Serving (Optional)

  • Extra honey for drizzling
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary sprigs for garnish
  • Cracked black pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry

  1. Thaw and Preheat: If your puff pastry is frozen, let it thaw according to package instructions (usually 30 minutes at room temperature). Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases. You can also trim the edges to make a more even rectangle, but this is optional.
  3. Score the Edges: Using a knife, score a 1/2-inch border around the edges of the pastry. Be careful not to cut all the way through. This border will allow the edges to puff up while baking, creating a raised frame for your filling.

Step 2: Arrange the Brie and Pears

  1. Add Brie: Place the brie slices within the scored border on the puff pastry, slightly overlapping them to cover the base. Brie melts beautifully, adding a creamy layer that pairs well with the pears.
  2. Arrange the Pears: Arrange the pear slices on top of the brie in a decorative pattern. You can overlap the slices slightly in rows or create a fan-like design. The key is to arrange them evenly for a visually appealing presentation.
  3. Add Optional Ingredients: If you’re using chopped nuts, sprinkle them over the pears for extra texture. You can also drizzle a bit of honey over the pears for added sweetness.

Step 3: Brush with Egg Wash

  1. Prepare Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk the egg until smooth. Use a pastry brush to apply the egg wash along the scored border. This will give the edges a golden, glossy finish as they bake.

Step 4: Bake the Tart

  1. Bake: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed around the edges. The brie should be melted, and the pears tender but still holding their shape.
  2. Cool Slightly: Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. This will allow the brie to set slightly, making it easier to slice.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  1. Garnish: Before serving, drizzle the tart with a bit more honey if desired, and sprinkle fresh thyme or rosemary leaves over the top for an aromatic finish. A light dusting of cracked black pepper can also add a subtle spiciness that complements the sweetness of the pears.
  2. Slice and Serve: Slice the tart into squares or rectangles and serve warm. It pairs beautifully with a simple green salad or as part of a cheese platter.
