For the Donuts (Use Homemade or Store-Bought)
- If Making Homemade Donuts:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
 - 2 teaspoons baking powder
 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
 - 1/2 cup whole milk
 - 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
 - 1 large egg
 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

 - Or Use Store-Bought Donuts: A variety of glazed donuts, plain donuts, and donut holes. You will need about 25-30 regular donuts and 10-15 donut holes for decorating.

For Decorating
- Powdered sugar, for dusting “snow” effect
 - Holiday sprinkles (red, green, white)
 - Mini holiday ornaments or edible glitter (optional)
 - Pretzels, rosemary sprigs, or edible greenery (for tree “branches”)
 - Edible stars or a small tree topper of your choice

Instructions
Step 1: Make the Donuts (Skip if Using Store-Bought)
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
 - Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
 - Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the donuts dense.
 - Bake or Fry the Donuts: If you have a donut pan, spoon the batter into the pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes. If frying, heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F and fry donuts until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Drain on paper towels.
 - Cool and Glaze: Let the donuts cool completely. If desired, dip them in a glaze made from powdered sugar and milk, or leave them plain if you plan to dust with powdered sugar later.

Step 2: Prepare the Tree Base
- Choose a Sturdy Base: Place a cake stand or a large, sturdy platter where you’ll build the tree. Ensure the surface is stable since the tree will be heavy once assembled.
 - Set Up a Cone Structure (Optional): For extra stability, use a cone-shaped Styrofoam piece as the base of your tree. Wrap it in plastic wrap to keep it food-safe. You can also skip this step and build the tree freehand.

Step 3: Build the Donut Tree
- Start with the Largest Donuts at the Bottom: Arrange a layer of donuts in a circular shape on the base. This will be the foundation of your tree.
 - Stack Donuts in a Pyramid Shape: Layer donuts in progressively smaller circles to form a pyramid. Secure each layer by carefully stacking the donuts slightly closer together as you move upwards.
 - Fill Gaps with Donut Holes: Use donut holes to fill in any spaces between the larger donuts. This will help create a fuller look and add stability to the structure.
 - Stabilize Each Layer: If needed, use toothpicks to secure the donuts in place, especially for the higher layers where stability may be an issue.

Step 4: Decorate the Donut Tree
- Dust with Powdered Sugar: Generously dust the entire donut tree with powdered sugar to create a snowy effect.
 - Add Holiday Sprinkles: Scatter red, green, and white holiday sprinkles over the donuts for a festive touch.
 - Place Mini Ornaments: Carefully place mini ornaments or edible glitter on the tree for added holiday flair. Ensure any decorations are food-safe.
 - Top with a Star: Add an edible star or other holiday-themed topper to the very top of the tree for a finishing touch.
 - Optional Greenery: Add pretzels, rosemary sprigs, or edible greenery between layers to resemble branches.

Step 5: Serve
- Present Your Tree: Place your Christmas Donut Tree on the dessert table as the holiday centerpiece.
 - Serve with Tongs or Skewers: For easy serving, provide small tongs or skewers for guests to grab donuts and donut holes from the tree.
 - Enjoy! This delicious and festive dessert is ready to impress and delight guests of all ages.
