For the Pasta:
- 12 oz (340g) pasta (penne, fusilli, or spaghetti)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional Add-Ins:
- 1 cup cooked chicken (shredded or diced)
- 1 cup cooked shrimp
- 1/2 cup frozen spinach (thawed and drained)
- 1/2 cup mushrooms (sliced)
For Garnish:
- Fresh basil leaves
- Extra Parmesan cheese
- Drizzle of olive oil
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
- Gather and measure out all your ingredients. Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic to ensure even cooking.
Step 2: Sauté the Aromatics
- In a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened and translucent.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
Step 3: Add the Tomato Base
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine with the aromatics.
- Add the dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Stir well to distribute the seasonings evenly.
Step 4: Cook the Pasta
- Add the dry pasta to the pot, followed by 3 cups of water. Stir to ensure the pasta is submerged in the liquid.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover the pot and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked to al dente.
Step 5: Add the Cream and Cheese
- Once the pasta is cooked, reduce the heat to low and stir in the heavy cream.
- Add the grated Parmesan cheese and mix until the cheese has melted and the sauce is creamy.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes, if needed.
Step 6: Optional Add-Ins
- If you’re adding protein or vegetables, stir them into the pot at this stage. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat everything through.
Step 7: Serve and Garnish
- Remove the pot from heat and divide the pasta among serving plates.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves, extra Parmesan cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil for added flavor. Serve immediately and enjoy!
