For the Apple Rings:
- 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji are ideal)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk (whole milk or plant-based milk)
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Optional Toppings:
- Powdered sugar
- Caramel sauce
- Vanilla glaze
- Whipped cream
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Apples
- Wash the apples thoroughly.
- Core the apples using an apple corer, or slice them crosswise into 1/4-inch thick rounds and use a small cookie cutter to remove the centers. This will create ring shapes.
- Pat the apple rings dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the batter adhere better.
Step 2: Make the Batter
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the apple rings but not too runny.
Step 3: Heat the Oil
- Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or saucepan, filling it about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to monitor the temperature, ensuring consistent frying.
Step 4: Coat and Fry the Apple Rings
- Dip each apple ring into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let the excess batter drip off.
- Carefully lower the coated apple ring into the hot oil. Fry 2-3 rings at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry each ring for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to flip the rings halfway through.
- Transfer the fried apple rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Step 5: Coat with Cinnamon Sugar
- In a shallow dish, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the coating.
- While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- Serve the fried cinnamon apple rings warm with your favorite toppings or dipping sauces. Enjoy them as they are or get creative with your presentation!
