Fried Cinnamon Apple Rings

  • Author: Amelia
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Rings:

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji are ideal)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk (whole milk or plant-based milk)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Optional Toppings:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Caramel sauce
  • Vanilla glaze
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

  1. Wash the apples thoroughly.
  2. Core the apples using an apple corer, or slice them crosswise into 1/4-inch thick rounds and use a small cookie cutter to remove the centers. This will create ring shapes.
  3. Pat the apple rings dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the batter adhere better.

Step 2: Make the Batter

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the apple rings but not too runny.

Step 3: Heat the Oil

  1. Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or saucepan, filling it about 2 inches deep. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to monitor the temperature, ensuring consistent frying.

Step 4: Coat and Fry the Apple Rings

  1. Dip each apple ring into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Let the excess batter drip off.
  2. Carefully lower the coated apple ring into the hot oil. Fry 2-3 rings at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  3. Fry each ring for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to flip the rings halfway through.
  4. Transfer the fried apple rings to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Step 5: Coat with Cinnamon Sugar

  1. In a shallow dish, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon for the coating.
  2. While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Serve the fried cinnamon apple rings warm with your favorite toppings or dipping sauces. Enjoy them as they are or get creative with your presentation!
