- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
For the Seasoning
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For Moisture
- 2 cups halal chicken or vegetable broth (more if needed)
- 2 large eggs, beaten
Optional Add-Ins
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds)
- 1/2 cup cooked, halal-certified turkey sausage or chicken, crumbled
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bread Cubes
- Toast the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the bread cubes on a large baking sheet in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil or melted butter and toss to coat.
- Bake: Toast the bread cubes for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and slightly crispy. Set aside to cool.
Step 2: Sauté the Aromatics
- Heat the Butter: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Cook the Vegetables: Add the onion and celery, sautéing until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
Step 3: Combine the Ingredients
- Mix the Bread and Vegetables: In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes with the sautéed vegetables.
- Add the Seasonings: Sprinkle the sage, thyme, rosemary, smoked paprika (if using), salt, and pepper over the mixture. Toss to combine evenly.
Step 4: Add Moisture
- Whisk the Eggs and Broth: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the chicken or vegetable broth.
- Combine: Gradually pour the liquid mixture over the bread and vegetable mixture, stirring gently to coat. The bread should be moist but not soggy. Add more broth if needed.
Step 5: Bake the Stuffing
- Transfer to a Baking Dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spoon the stuffing mixture into it, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
- Crisp the Top: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy.
Step 6: Serve
- Remove the stuffing from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for an added touch of flavor and color.
