Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a leaner option)
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning mix (or homemade taco seasoning)
- ¾ cup water
- 1 (9-inch) refrigerated pie crust (or homemade crust if you prefer)
- 1 cup refried beans (optional but adds a delicious layer of flavor)
- 1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a taco blend)
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 1 small can (4 oz) diced green chilies (optional for extra flavor)
- ¼ cup sliced black olives (optional)
- ½ cup crushed tortilla chips (for garnish)
- Optional toppings: sour cream, guacamole, salsa, shredded lettuce, jalapeños, or chopped cilantro
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a 9-inch pie dish by greasing it lightly or lining it with parchment paper.
- Cook the ground beef: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a spatula, until it’s browned and cooked through.
- Sauté the onion: Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
- Add taco seasoning: Stir in the taco seasoning and water, mixing well to coat the beef evenly. Simmer for 3-4 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
- Prepare the crust: Roll out the pie crust and press it into the prepared pie dish, trimming any excess dough around the edges. Use a fork to prick the bottom of the crust to prevent it from puffing up.
- Layer the beans: Spread a thin, even layer of refried beans (if using) on the bottom of the crust. This adds flavor and helps prevent the crust from becoming soggy.
- Add the beef: Spoon the seasoned beef mixture over the beans, spreading it evenly across the crust.
- Top with cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the beef layer.
- Add extras: If desired, sprinkle diced tomatoes, green chilies, and black olives over the cheese layer for added flavor and texture.
- Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish and serve: Let the taco pie cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with crushed tortilla chips and your favorite toppings, such as sour cream, guacamole, or salsa.
