Ingredients
Scale
For the Honey Mustard Chicken
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs (about 1.5 pounds)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for searing, if using stovetop method)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Honey Mustard Sauce
- 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard (optional, for texture)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (for creaminess, optional)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for color and mild smokiness)
- Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Step 1: Make the Honey Mustard Sauce
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the Dijon mustard, honey, whole grain mustard, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, garlic powder, and paprika. Whisk until smooth and well-combined.
- Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed. Add more honey if you prefer a sweeter sauce, or more Dijon mustard for extra tang. Set aside half of the sauce for serving, and reserve the other half for cooking the chicken.
Step 2: Prepare the Chicken
- Pat the chicken breasts or thighs dry with paper towels, then season both sides with salt and black pepper.
- If you’re marinating the chicken, place it in a zip-top bag or a shallow dish and pour half of the honey mustard sauce over it, turning to coat. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes for enhanced flavor (optional but recommended).
Step 3: Cook the Chicken
Stovetop Method
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chicken breasts or thighs to the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through (the internal temperature should reach 165°F).
- Reduce the heat to low, add half of the honey mustard sauce, and let it simmer for an additional 1-2 minutes, spooning the sauce over the chicken to coat it well.
Oven-Baked Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Place the seasoned or marinated chicken in a baking dish, pour half of the honey mustard sauce over it, and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. For extra caramelization, remove the foil during the last 5 minutes of baking.
Grilled Method
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates.
- Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 6-8 minutes per side, basting with the honey mustard sauce as it cooks.
- Grill until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F and has beautiful grill marks.
Step 4: Serve and Garnish
- Drizzle the remaining honey mustard sauce over the cooked chicken for extra flavor.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives for a pop of color.
- Serve hot and enjoy your delicious Honey Mustard Chicken!
