Ingredients
Scale
For the Chicken:
- 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 large eggs (beaten)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Honey Sesame Sauce:
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water for slurry)
For Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (toasted)
- 2 green onions (sliced)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
- Pat the chicken pieces dry with paper towels and season them with salt and black pepper.
- In a shallow dish, mix the flour and cornstarch. In another shallow dish, beat the eggs.
- Dip each piece of chicken into the egg, allowing any excess to drip off, and then coat it in the flour-cornstarch mixture. Place the coated chicken on a plate and repeat with the remaining pieces.
Step 2: Fry the Chicken
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the chicken in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 4-5 minutes per batch, or until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked (internal temperature of 165°F/75°C).
- Transfer the fried chicken to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining chicken.
Step 3: Make the Honey Sesame Sauce
- In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic powder, and water. Whisk until well combined.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
- Add the cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water) and stir until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Remove the sauce from heat.
Step 4: Toss the Chicken in the Sauce
- In a large skillet or wok, combine the fried chicken and honey sesame sauce. Toss gently to coat the chicken evenly in the sauce.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
- Transfer the Honey Sesame Chicken to a serving dish. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
- Serve immediately with steamed rice, noodles, or sautéed vegetables.
