Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 4 slices of milk bread (shokupan or any soft white bread)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon sugar for sweet toasts

Sweet Toppings

  • Honey or maple syrup
  • Nut butter (peanut, almond, or hazelnut spread)
  • Fresh fruits like bananas, strawberries, or blueberries
  • Whipped cream or cream cheese

Savory Toppings

  • Avocado slices with a pinch of salt and pepper
  • Soft-boiled egg with a sprinkle of chili flakes
  • Sliced smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill
  • Tomato slices with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic glaze

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

  • Begin with fresh slices of milk bread. If desired, trim the crusts for a refined presentation.

Step 2: Butter the Bread

  • Spread a thin layer of butter on one or both sides of the bread. For sweet toast, sprinkle a touch of sugar over the buttered side.

Step 3: Toast the Bread

  • In a Skillet: Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place the bread buttered side down and toast for 2–3 minutes until golden brown. Flip and toast the other side for 1–2 minutes.
  • In a Toaster: Toast the bread until golden and crisp. Spread butter afterward for an even coating.
  • In the Oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C). Arrange bread slices on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes per side or until golden.

Step 4: Add Toppings

  • Top with your favorite sweet or savory ingredients, layering flavors for a dynamic bite.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve warm and crispy with coffee, tea, or juice.
