Pastry Pesto Christmas Trees

  • Author: Amelia
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 16 mini pastry trees 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Pastry Trees

  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1/2 cup pesto (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Mini edible star toppers (optional, for decoration)
  • Fresh herbs or edible glitter (optional, for garnishing)

For the Homemade Pesto (Optional)

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts or walnuts
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pesto (Skip if Using Store-Bought)

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a food processor, combine basil, Parmesan cheese, pine nuts, and garlic.
  2. Pulse Until Combined: Pulse the ingredients until finely chopped.
  3. Add Olive Oil: With the food processor running, slowly add olive oil until the mixture is smooth and thick.
  4. Season: Add salt and pepper to taste, then transfer the pesto to a bowl and set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Puff Pastry

  1. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Roll out each sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth any creases.
  2. Cut Pastry Strips: Cut each sheet of puff pastry into strips about 1/2 inch wide and 6 inches long. You should end up with around 16 strips in total.
  3. Spread the Pesto: Spread a thin layer of pesto on each strip, leaving a small border along the edges to prevent overflow.

Step 3: Shape the Pastry Trees

  1. Fold and Stack: Starting from the bottom of each strip, fold the strip back and forth to create a stacked, triangular shape resembling a Christmas tree.
  2. Secure the Tree Shape: Insert a toothpick or cocktail stick through the center of each folded pastry to hold it in place.
  3. Brush with Egg Wash: Place each tree on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and brush lightly with egg wash.
  4. Sprinkle with Parmesan: Sprinkle grated Parmesan over the trees for extra flavor and a golden finish.

Step 4: Bake the Pastry Trees

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  3. Cool Slightly: Remove from the oven and let the trees cool slightly before handling.

Step 5: Decorate and Serve

  1. Add Edible Star Toppers: Once the pastry trees have cooled slightly, add mini edible stars to the top of each tree.
  2. Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle chopped fresh herbs or edible glitter around the base of each tree for added visual appeal.
  3. Serve Warm: Transfer the trees to a serving platter and serve warm or at room temperature.
