Southern Fried Cabbage

  • Author: Amelia
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Southern Fried Cabbage

  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 6 slices halal beef or turkey bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional, for extra flavor and color)
  • 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth (optional, for extra moisture)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (for a smoky flavor)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Optional Add-ins and Variations

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper for added spice
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar for tanginess
  • 1 teaspoon sugar for a slightly sweet contrast

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  1. Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces, discarding the core and any tough outer leaves.
  2. Slice the onion thinly and mince the garlic. Chop the bell pepper if using.
  3. Cut the halal bacon into small pieces for easy cooking.

Step 2: Cook the Halal Bacon

  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped halal beef or turkey bacon to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess grease. Leave any rendered fat in the pan for added flavor.

Step 3: Sauté the Onions and Garlic

  1. In the same skillet with the bacon drippings, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sauté over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until they start to soften and become translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

Step 4: Add the Cabbage and Bell Pepper

  1. Add the chopped cabbage and bell pepper (if using) to the skillet with the onions and garlic.
  2. Stir everything together to coat the cabbage in the oil and seasonings, then sprinkle with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes (if desired).
  3. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, until the cabbage becomes tender and slightly caramelized. If the cabbage starts to stick, add a splash of chicken or vegetable broth to deglaze the pan and add moisture.

Step 5: Finish and Serve

  1. Once the cabbage is tender and lightly browned, add the cooked halal bacon back to the skillet. Stir to combine and let everything heat through for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  2. Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes if desired.
  3. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color, and serve warm.
