- 1 bell pepper, chopped (optional, for extra flavor and color)
- 1/4 cup chicken or vegetable broth (optional, for extra moisture)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (for a smoky flavor)
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Optional Add-ins and Variations
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper for added spice
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar for tanginess
- 1 teaspoon sugar for a slightly sweet contrast
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
- Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces, discarding the core and any tough outer leaves.
- Slice the onion thinly and mince the garlic. Chop the bell pepper if using.
- Cut the halal bacon into small pieces for easy cooking.
Step 2: Cook the Halal Bacon
- In a large skillet or frying pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the chopped halal beef or turkey bacon to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess grease. Leave any rendered fat in the pan for added flavor.
Step 3: Sauté the Onions and Garlic
- In the same skillet with the bacon drippings, add another tablespoon of olive oil if needed.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until they start to soften and become translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
Step 4: Add the Cabbage and Bell Pepper
- Add the chopped cabbage and bell pepper (if using) to the skillet with the onions and garlic.
- Stir everything together to coat the cabbage in the oil and seasonings, then sprinkle with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes (if desired).
- Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes, until the cabbage becomes tender and slightly caramelized. If the cabbage starts to stick, add a splash of chicken or vegetable broth to deglaze the pan and add moisture.
Step 5: Finish and Serve
- Once the cabbage is tender and lightly browned, add the cooked halal bacon back to the skillet. Stir to combine and let everything heat through for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning with more salt, pepper, or red pepper flakes if desired.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color, and serve warm.
